Archaeological Site of Vergina

Just 120km away, in the County of Imathia is the archaeological site of Vergina, featuring the palaces and royal tombs of Vergina.

This area was the old capital of the ancient state of Makedonia, called the Aige, and is the place for the Palace, the ancient theater and the Royal Tombs.

Of particular note are the tombs of the royal dynasty, most notably King Philip II and a young prince who is identified as Alexander IV, and a cist grave. The royal tombs were discovered in 1977-8, by the archaeologist Andronikos
